For local residents who can't wait until the next long weekend, Theatre Collingwood may just have what you are looking for.
The theatre company's next production is a showing of Norm Foster's The Long Weekend. The play hits the stage at the Gayety Theatre on Sept. 17.
The play is about two couples, who have been best friends for more than 15 years. However, when they get together at the cottage, the truth of their friendship comes to the forefront.
The play stars Richard Quesnel as Max - the obsessive lawyer, Sharon Heldt as his wife Wynn and Leisa Way and Kris Ryan as their friends Abby and Roger.
Quesnel says although Max is obsessive, he said he does have dreams and desires.
"We watch him struggle with that," he said.
Heldt describes her character as "shrewd and uptight," and says it's interesting to see the interaction between the couples when things start to get heated between Wynn and Max and things start to heat up between Roger and Wynn,
"We're all pretty self-absorbed," Heldt said.
Heldt is no stranger to the play as it is her third time performing the show. This is a similar situation to Way, who has performed the play a number of times, but she's always played Wynn, never Abby.
Way said her character is selfish but has a "good heart." She said the performance is something that any couple who has been married for a long time, can relate to.
"You start hating the things you used to love about each other," She said. "None of the characters are unlikable, they challenge you to like them. The audience gets a kick out of it. It really hits home. That's the great thing about comedy, it allows yourself to laugh at things that in real life, you can't laugh at."
Ryan said the show is very well written and very funny.
"It's a wonderful show to play to the audience. They really love it," he said. "There is a little bit of Roger in everybody."
Performances run from Sept. 17- 20, and Sept. 23-27 at 8 p.m., with one matinee at 2 p.m. on Sept.18
